Hugo and Co. Book one - By David Teoh

Introduction: Hugo and Co

“YOU see, I hate life.”

That has always been the case for Hugo. He was always sad, depressed, and never had an ambition or goal in his life. Have you ever been to Alabama? He acts like 90% of the citizens there.

“You're like this every day. Negative, negative. That is the only thing going on in your mind”. Meet Max, his best friend.

He's surprisingly able to tolerate the negativity in Hugo. There are more characters later on in the story, but it will remain like this for now.

Death, death, death, death”. He seemed like a mentally abused teenager with thoughts circling around nonstop, eating him up. He can't do that.

He's an average schoolboy who…..he doesn't have a girlfriend. Honestly, he won’t get one in a trillion years.

“I can honestly imagine Hugo right now, sitting next to May. Oh god, that will be the best moment of his life!” said Max.

Hugo loved May for about 3 months now. However, the chances of him and May getting together are slim to nothing.

“I feel really bad for him. He's lost his previous best friend 2 months ago due to Lance getting a girlfriend,” Hugo thought to himself.

Well, he does have other friends like Erol, Sing, Kazu, etc. However, none of them gave him the same spark as Lance. After he got a girlfriend, he's been sitting here depressed, feeling like no one cares about him.

Introduction: Lance and Mia

TWO months now, we've been together”, Lance proclaimed happily. He almost missed Hugo, but at the same time, he didn't. He enjoyed spending time with Mia instead of his ex-best friend.

“What happened to Hugo? Have you talked to him at all recently?” Mia asked.

“Well, we talk like once every three days. I don't think he's bothered to talk to me anymore. Whenever I see him, he's too down, sitting with Max, and just never the same.”

“How about you check on him? I feel bad, he seems like the saddest kid in the whole world. Even worse than a stinky o’ Chiefs fan.”

“Sure, I’ll try," Lance replied.

Chapter 1

Hugo walked into the far left of the cafeteria, where Max and his friend group sat. He was panicking and his heart was pounding faster than a cheetah.

From a distance, Kazu saw Lance walking by towards their table.

“Oh god, it's the person who spat on my laptop!” said Kazu. He hated Lance, after multiple incidents. “Hugo, he ditched you, right? Why even bother to talk to that stinky 'ol punk?”

Do you know the quote ‘It's not whether you get knocked down, It's whether you get up again’ by Vincent Lombardi?

Hugo did not achieve that.

Since the departure of Lance, he's been a shadow of his former self. Once an extrovert roaming around the area making friends is now a worse introvert than Max who sits there with negative thoughts.

“Lance, Lance, LANCE,” Hugo screamed, “Why are you here?”

“Uhh, hi, I just wanted to ask how are you?”

“Leave me alone, I have a new life."

Lance knew something was not right. Hugo was never like this towards him. Whatever Hugo said repeated in his mind multiple times, as he realized his friendship is not fading away. It's faded away.

“LEAVE HIM ALONE, WE DON'T WANT IRRELEVANT PEOPLE HERE!” Kazu screamed

It’s bloody Kazu, why do I even need to bother with him, Lance thought.

The old, classical Hugo would have easily punched Lance in the face, but he isn’t like that anymore.

“You left me, and never came back," Hugo mumbled. "Where were you? Even when I tried to talk to you, you wouldn't give two damns about me.”

Do you want the Authors verdict on this? Hugo should just leave Lance alone. (Breaking the fourth wall!)

At this point, Lance does not want to return to Hugo. It's all memories now. Hugo has Max and many more people to talk to.

Who does Lance have? One person?

It's not even Hugo...

Lance walked away, and couldn’t even care less. He thinks Hugo hates him more than Vicky Holdcroft now. In fact, he does.

Chapter 2 (Section 1)

“What’s happening? Oh, how I miss Emiliano! He would have stopped all of this.” Erol said.

Emiliano was a true leader. Yes, he may have left half a year ago, but he remains in everyone's hearts.

The incident regarding Lance would have not happened if he was still here.

Erol always had bad feelings about Hugo, at least since Lance left him. He feels like Hugo is just too insecure. Never had self-esteem, nowhere near his former self.

Chapter 2 (Section 2)

Lance began to have massively suicidal thoughts. He thinks taking his own life is the best thing to do for him to be happy.

Right before he went outside, he turned back to tell Hugo something.

“Why are you back?” Hugo asked.

“I want to commit suicide,” Lance said angrily.

Right before he stomped away, Hugo said a piece of his mind.

“Yeah yeah, sure you're not seeking attention?”

Lance stomped away. Hugo didn't even care.

Chapter 3 (the horror begins)

Thiry minutes later, Hugo and his friends entered PE class. While entering the door, Hugo heard extremely haunting sounds, and his friends heard them as well.

“What is that!?” Max squeaked.

“Am I hearing stuff? This is not real,” Kazu said in an extremely shocked manner.

They walked slowly onto their seats.

Unexpectedly, they all heard a soft “hello there.” Right in their ears.

What was that?

“Hold up, that sounds like Lance,” Hugo said.

“It...is….me” the ghost whispered, specifically in his ears.

The ground started to shake. Suddenly, a ghost rises from the ground, 7ft tall, it’s a ghost Lance...

“Hugo. Wong. Did you say I was making excuses?”

“No. No. No. No. NO. DID YOU-”

“Oh what a nice guy! Not caring about a suicidal person! Say goodbye to your lovely friends, specifically Kazu, in THREE-”

“WHAT?” Erol shouted.

“TWO-”

“KILL ME, GET ME OUT OF HERE!” Kazu shouted.

“Little coward, guess who's scared of me now. ONE-’”

Hugo started to feel like his particles were disappearing.

One by one, from leg to the head, he disappeared into a Green Aura.

He’s gone.

That seat is empty.

The only thing remaining is Hugo’s bag.

Chapter 4 (Section 1)

Hugo fell into a tiny room, which looked exactly like a prison cell. He didn't even have time to think through what just happened as a Tall, Giant Lance stood right in front of him.

“Where am I?” Hugo said, with a really scared voice.

“Have fun trying to escape. I told your friends how to get to you. See ya later bud!”

Hugo had multiple thoughts in his mind. When will they come? Are they gonna come? Will they get killed in the process of saving me?

Hold up, he was in the storage room on the twelfth floor!?

Chapter 4 (Section 2)

Everyone was in massive shock.

What just happened?

Where did Hugo go?

Why is he a ghost?

This has never happened in the history of the earth. Just as everyone was about to scream for help, clear words were whispered in their ears.

School. Tonight. 8 pm. Tonight or never. See you there.

“Do we trust it?” Kazu asked. “He hated me with a passion, I might suffer several severe consequences.”

“Manchester United are playing Liverpool tonight, and it’s gonna be Haaland’s debut, but friendship is more important than all of that,” Max said with a loud and clear voice.

Everyone agreed and planned to meet outside the school at 8 pm.

Just as everyone in the room was wondering if they’re facing someone's trauma, Mia comes into the room.

"Hey, guys? Have you seen Lance? He said he was coming to math! Wait, why do you all seem so scared?”

“Answering your first question, no clue. Answering your second question, we have our reasons.” Sing said.

“Just be honest, we need her in our hunting force too,” Erol said truthfully.

“Eight PM, tonight at school…” Erol began to tell Mia the full story.

While Erol was ⅓ into the story, Mia stormed out of the room crying. Erol and everyone around him felt extremely bad for Mia.

Chapter 5

At 7:30 in the evening, only Max was there. He had the keys to enter, considering his mother was a teacher.

Ten minutes have passed and a paranoid Kazu came along.

“Are you sure this is worth it? I don't want to lose my life!” Kazu screamed at Max.

"Yes...yes… chill,” Max said nervously. He knew Kazu was fuming on the inside.

Twenty minutes later, Erol and Sing came together at the same time.

“Should we enter now?” Erol asked.

“Sure. Proceed to extraction point...” Kazu screamed in fear.

“Too much CSGO Kazu. Too much CSGO.” Max said in frustration

As Max unlocked the doors, everyone heard someone shouting.

“Wait for me! Wait for me!"

It was Mia!

“Why are you here? The ghost did not invite you.”

“I don’t care. Count me in! Also, I invited Grace into the hunt”

“Who….?” Sing asked, with a really bad feeling

"Hello, I'm Here!" Grace squeaked. "Is a detective needed, that's me!"

All the boys thought: why is she here? Just let her in I guess. The more the merrier? Is that a phrase we should be using right now? Honestly, I don’t know.

The gang walked into the school, late at night.

After the first step in, everyone already felt like backing out.

Kazu tried to act like a showoff.

Since there were girls there, he said confidently “I'll check the main lobby by myself. All of you can stay together.”

The others groaned at his faux confidence.

Chapter 5 (Section 1)

Kazu walked confidently into the main hall. All he could hear was a leaf hitting the ground. However, as he walked deeper in, he felt as if something was not right.

He started to regret his decision as he saw a dead soul lying on the floor in front of the help desk.

“What happened here?” Kazu whispered in a fearful voice.

Just as he was about to back off and regroup with the others, the door slammed shut by itself.

“You fell for it,” whispered a small faint voice.

“Get me out of here!” Kazu yelled

A 7 feet ghost rose from the floor and appeared right in front of him, holding a weapon. This time, it was Lance again.

“Idiot….You fell for it fool! You fell for it!” Lance evilly cackled.

“I have a life, set me free!” Kazu squeaked.

“What are you gonna do? Do you think I’ll let you go just like this?”

Kazu stepped back, but that wouldn’t remove the amount of fear he's facing right now. “Uhh...no?”

“Is that right? What do you want me to do to your friends? Especially that nasty prick, Hugo?”

“Hugo? He’s still alive? Let all of us free!"

“Absolutely not...," mumbled Lance. "Emiliano? Rise!”

At this time, an enormous Emiliano raised from the floor.

“Emiliano!? What happened to you!?” Kazu screamed as loud as he possibly could.

The gang heard and instantly rushed to the main lobby.

“You do not understand what happened next…” Lance proceeded with an evil laugh

Emiliano did not hesitate to harm Kazu. They may have been best friends, but not anymore.

“Kazu? You realized how no one has contacted me since I left? What if I told you I’m dead? Guess what, you're joining with me!"

With full force, he lifted Kazu from the ground with his gigantic hands and wrapped them tightly around Kazu.

“Let me free...” were Kazu’s last words.

Emiliano threw him against the wall and left his dead body on the ground, waiting for people to find out.

Chapter 5 (Section 2)

Everyone heard the bang against the wall and his last words.

“We’ve lost one…” Max moaned.

Just as everyone was wondering what was going on, a faint voice whispered into their ears.

“Come to the ninth floor!”

Chapter 6

The gang sprinted as fast as they could pass the school until they reached the Basketball court. The doors behind them slammed so hard that everyone froze.

"Why inside a basketball court?!" Max screamed. "Get us out of here!!"

The scoreboard mysteriously turned on.

“Welcome, Welcome to the NBA quiz. Answer these questions and you will be set free. Question 1, who does LeBron James play for?”

Mia loved the NBA, so this trivia was easy for her.

“Los Angeles Lakers!” Mia yelled confidently.

“Correct! Second question, whos top of the Western Conference?”

“Utah Jazz!”

“Correct! Final question, who does Nicola Jokic play for?”

Mia did not know the answer to this question, as she despised the Denver Nuggets. However, Grace was Serbian, so she easily answered the question.

“Oh, I know this one!" exclaimed Grace, "Denver Nuggets!!”

“Correct! You have 5 seconds to exit this room.”

“Okay, run!” Erol screamed.

Everyone ran out, just in time as the doors shut tight. The gang ran up the stairs. However, on the fifth floor, when everyone turned back, Max was gone.

Chapter 7 (Section 1)

“Ahhhhh!” Max screamed as he got sucked into a hole.

Finally, he landed on a concrete surface.

“Let me free! ” he squeaked

Once again, here came Lance.

“Unlucky mate, you were the last one to step on my pressure plate...very unlucky," Lance smirked. "Am I going to set you free? Absolutely not.”

Max found himself inside his homeroom class. Cluelessly, he stood up and wandered around.

Lance evilly laughed, then proceeded to say “Do you want to watch your friends suffer? I set up another 4 pressure plates on the 6th floor. Here, I have access to the security camera. Watch this.”

“No, my friends! Not them!” Max shouted, but it was useless.

He helplessly watched them step on the pressure plate, and got sucked into the hole too. This time, to a separate place.

Chapter 7 (Section 2)

“Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch.” Max heard the 4 kids scream, from the television.

The 4 kids got up from the ground and found themselves in front of 2 doors.

“Two!? How are we gonna decide on which one?” Erol said, really confused.

“I Guess we split up. Mia and I will go to the left, both of you to the right” Grace Said confidently.

“Bet. Let’s do this!” Sing shouted.

Chapter 8 (Erol and Sing)

Erol and Sing entered the room on the right. It was just a massive hallway.

“Oh god, I’ve played multiple horror games, there’s gonna be a jump scare!” Erol said. He seemed freaked out.

Both friends walked down the hallway, awaiting a jump scare.

Halfway through the hall, they saw a plank fall right in front of them.

Plank by plank, the ceiling started to fall.

“Does...this mean it’s collapsing?”

“Yes-- Run!!”

Both of them ran into one of the rooms and locked themselves in.

"What the hell?! How are we going to get out of here!?" Sing shouted in a panicked voice.

Blood started to drip down from the ceiling.

“Rain? Blood? Wait, this is blood. Blood??!!” Erol squeaked.

There was a dead person on the ceiling fan.

“You see. I'm not staying in this room any longer! I'm out!" Sing shouted.

Sing saw a balcony right outside the window and instantly took his chances. He broke the window and ran out.

It was 9 PM. Everything was pitch black.

“Hello? Is someone grabbing me?”

Erol, who was standing on the inside of the room, watched a monster with gigantic arms, wrap them around Sing, and instantly take him away, far out of his sight.

“Am I….alone?”

Erol stood there in the room by himself. He thought that his life is over.

Chapter 9 (Mia and Grace)

Not knowing what happened between the boys, both girls walked down the same hallway as the boys did.

This time with a different fate.

The hallways had statues on the side, all staring down on them. They felt creeped out.

“We should have taken the other one,” Grace sighed.

The two girls continued to walk down the hallway until they reached the end. There was a really old and rusty door, with a cracked knob. Both girls hesitated to open the door, but after minutes of shivering and shaking, they eventually opened the door, thinking that something woeful was going to happen.

When the door opened, a scary sound came into their ears.

“They're looking down on you… turn back…”

The two girls turned back. The statues started to move their swords, walk out of their designated location and walked towards the two girls.

“Run!” Mia screamed.

They ran into the room and shut the door behind them tightly.

“Why did you choose this door?!" Mia yelled at Grace.

“Chill… Chill… We’re probably doing better than Erol and Sing right now” Grace said calmly.

Not anymore though.

A ghost Emiliano raised from the floor right in front of them.

“Meet the assassinator of Kazu,” He said in a deep voice.

“Oh.. hi… haven't seen you in a while,” Mia said in a panicked voice

Emiliano creepily walked towards them, as the two girls tried to walk backward. They eventually hit the wall.

“What should I do with the two of you? Also, those two mischievous boys are under my watch too”

“Free all of us, now!" Grace screamed at the ghost.

“Not right now….Your faith remains on one person…he can choose who survives and who doesn’t.”

The two girls seemed confused.

Their faith remained on….

Chapter 10

Max.

“Max...Max….Max!” Lance screamed at Max.

“Yes sir?” Max said, in a really scared voice.

“Who would you save? Erol and Sing, Or, Mia and Grace?”

Max took a few seconds to come up with his answer. “Erol and Sing.”

“Good choice, watch this little Max!”

Lance pulled up the TV right in front of Max and showed Emiliano slaughtering the two girls.

Blood.

Gore.

All in his mind.

“OH, GOD...FU-” Max squeaked.

From the ceiling, Erol and Sing fell right down onto the floor. Thank god it was carpeted.

“Alper and Chen...Welcome back to reality.” Lance proceeded with an evil laugh.

Max, who was still on the floor, eventually stood up. When he slowly opened his eyes and saw Erol and Sing. He immediately ran and hugged the both of them.

"Max, you're full of dust!" Erol yelled at Max. Of course, he had to ruin the moment.

“Oh, okay,” Max said in a miserable voice

Slowly, a girl, who was much bigger and taller than Lance, appeared from the floor.

“Join my force, sweetheart. Takedown the 3 boys.” It was Mia.

“ Dear Maxim Havercroft, you did not save me, did you? Revenge will be sweet. Just wait for it” Mia said, in a frustrated voice.

“I had no other option!” Max screamed!

“See you on the 12th floor...”

The three boys got teleported to the 12th floor and found themselves in a hallway. In front of them held a massive maze.

Erol, who tried to be a leader, spoke up. “Split ways, I’ll go to the left, Sing, you go down the middle, Max, down the right.

The two boys agreed. The three boys ran into the maze.

Chapter 11 (Section 1)

Lance and Mia entered each of their personalized torture chambers. Lance offered Mia the role of killing Max using the secret cameras.

“Oh, how nice, is dear Max going down on the right? I have my plans.” Mia said. She was tempted to get revenge.

“It’s the third button, press it when Max is in sight of the camera. Bye-bye.”

“Gotcha.”

Just as they were chatting, Sing sprinted past the tunnel in the middle.

"Sweet! Max is coming soon!"

Just as she slammed the table, she accidentally spilled her glass of coke on the control panel, right onto the second button.

"Oh, God! Not this!”

She panicked, and pushed down the second button, in an attempt to clear the liquid.

Just as Sing ran past the middle lane, a boxing glove appeared right in front of him

“What the-” He couldn’t even finish his sentence.

The floating boxing glove steadied a massive punch, and eventually landed the shot. It sent Sing backward, onto the wall, at 210 km/h this time.

Chapter 11 (Section 2)

Erol and Max had finished the maze. Right when they were out, they proceeded to scream at the top of their lungs.

“DID YOU HEAR SING SCREAM, WHAT WAS THAT?”

“HE WAS ON THE WALL RIGHT NEXT TO ME! I SWEAR I HEARD A MASSIVE THUD.”

Just as they were screaming, Hugo heard Erol and Max from a small distance

Hugo felt extremely relieved.

“LET ME OUT OF HERE, I’M IN THE STORAGE ROOM. I REPEAT, THE STORAGE ROOM.”

Erol and Max froze. “Is..is...that Hugo? Storage room”

Erol asked “GET TO THE EXTRACTION POINT”

They ran towards the storage room, instantly picked out the keys from his pocket, and unlocked the door.

“FREAKING HELL, IM FREE. THANKS SO MUCH-”

“STOP TALKING, FOR GOD'S SAKE, GET OUT OF HERE, NOW”

Hugo did not know what happened. However, he decided to listen to the two remaining boys and ran towards the stairs.

“ARE YOU MAD? PRESSURE PLATES? WHY ARE WE TAKING THE STAIRS” Max screamed.

“DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THE ELEVATOR? REALLY?” Erol screamed back at Max.

“Sure..”

Hugo added his opinion. “You know what? I'm lazy, let’s take the elevator”

“What? Fine,” Erol sighed.

Thank god the elevator was already on the 12th floor. They ran into the elevator, slammed the first-floor button, and held down the close button.

“Hugo, how was life locked in there?’’ Erol asked curiously

“Thug. I sat there eating the Chips they had, maybe around 12 packets of Doritos, 2 packets of Classic Lays, 3 Packets of Barbecue Lays, 6 packets…”

Erol cut him off “That's it, you still love eating don’t you?”

“Yes….” Hugo said in an embarrassed voice.

Fifth Floor….Fourth floor...On the third floor...the lift was in silence. First Floor.

“Run out of the lift!” Max screamed

The three boys ran until they reached the field. Right after that, was the backdoor exit.

“I see an exit! It’s over!” Hugo screamed in a really happy voice.

“You did not go through what we went through,” said Erol, in a bragging tone

“What do you mean”

“Long story…”

50 meters before the exit, three ghosts summoned.

Finale (Final Boss)

Three ghosts raised from the floor. Hugo did not expect this incoming, well, apart from the Lance ghost.

"Emiliano! Long time! What are you doing here...as a ghost?" Exclaimed Hugo.

“Aww Hugo, I feel bad for you so-called best friend. Where is he now? I’m afraid he’s officially zoned out of the world”

He grabbed an ax, it almost looked like the one that was used in The Shining.

Just as the ax was about to chop Hugo, two ghosts came from the sky and blocked the attack with their strong hands.

“Do you know ghosts can also die in their afterlife? That's gonna happen.”

That was Kazu speaking. That's right, Grace is back too!

“Meet the Weeb, Kazu. Too bad you don’t know my powers.” Kazu punched Emiliano. The punch was so powerful that it sent Emiliano to the ground.

“GOLDEN EXPERIENCE REQUIEM, FINISHER”

There goes Emiliano. His body particles slowly disappeared.

"Emiliano, where was your Kishin Hunter from Soul Eater?" Lance asked. "Oh right, you hated anime..."

“Oh, watch my MMA skills” Grace screamed, “Pull counter!” One Punch single-handedly sent Lance flying in the sky, eventually landing on the floor.

"Not too soon! Detroit Smash!"

"Oh my god, what do we do!" Erol screamed.

"The three of you, run! Get out of here now!" Kazu ordered the three boys.

Together, the three boys shouted, "Out of here! Thanks, sir!"

The three boys ran out as quickly as they could, confused about what just happened.

Aftermath

Finally, they were far away from the school. They watched the school engulf into flames, and eventually exploded.

They hid in Max’s house for the rest of the night, as they lied to their parents they went for a sleepover at Max’s house.

“Welcome home boys, come in fast! It's dangerous outside!”

In Max’s room, the three boys could hear the television reporting the explosion of the school. The three boys were in the room, making a deal that this will forever remain between the three of them.

One month later, authorities were still trying to figure out the reason behind the explosion. The police found two dead kids in the building, who have been buried at the largest cemetery in the world. Nobody will ever know what happened, apart from those three boys.

What happens next?

Three years have passed, as that moment will forever remain in the three boys’ minds.

They are in year 9 and have just received an invitation to live at a massive mansion for a night, located in Los Angeles.

Do the boys go?
