Dying Embers - by Kathy Liu + About the author!

Winner of Creativity Fest's One sentence Writing Contest!

She took one last look at the dying embers of the planet she once called home–the mosaic of amber and violets in the water an innocent reflection of the towering waves that had washed her family away–before stepping into the spacecraft, heart already longing for a home that she has not yet left, but nevertheless, lost.

Article about the author!

Kathy is a high school junior in Toronto, Ontario who enjoys art and animation in her free time. She hasn't done written competitions but decided to try this one out since it was just a one-sentence contest. Thoughts of this piece are in light of the recent severe floods in Pakistan the news, due to the climate crisis. It made Kathy think about the future of the world and the lack of action on climate issues due to the prioritization of politics. She's reminded of the trop in science fiction where characters just "abandon" Earth when all else fails.
