I think it was the beginning of high school when I finally started
Listening to Tupac
My mom called him a poet
I didn’t know what she meant till I heard him
His words meant something
His raps had a message
These are the poems we don’t study in class
The imperfect that aren’t filled with literary devices
The ones that have emotion, and love, and care
That are speaking out knowing they deserve to be heard
When did I decide I didn’t need to be heard?
