What The Graveyard Zine Is About - Article by Layla Wu

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

The graveyard zine is a magazine founded by three teenagers that are dedicated to paying tribute to the past and future artists of planet earth. For generations, graveyards have been used to commemorate the deaths of our loved ones. As a result, the graveyard zine was formed to ensure that our deceased artists are remembered for their great contributions to the art world, and our society as a whole. In just three months, their Instagram account has amassed over 350 followers, and it is utilized to provide sneak peeks of upcoming issues and events. Their well-designed posts demonstrate that they place immense importance on art and the overall aesthetic of their organization.

Their recent issue, “The Great Escapism” centers around the golden age of Hollywood, which was around the 1920s to 1960s. It showcases the fame, glitz, and glamour of Hollywood back in the day, and how movies were employed as a form of escapism. The issue also spotlights topics such as racial injustice, body shaming, and misogyny in the form of visual arts and fiction writing. It even includes an exclusive playlist to listen to while reading the magazine, with performers such as Frank Sinatra, Vera Lynn, and Lena Horne, all of whom were great singers and songwriters of their time. Each page is personally designed with its own vibe to match the writing. Plus, the talent and thought woven into every submission will blow your mind. This issue contains an interview with Jimena Yengle, an aspiring artist, writer, and actress. While promoting her recently translated book "Roma Enamorada," she expresses her love for romance literature and upbeat pop songs! There is also a fashion and beauty section, which showcases quirky golden-age clothing pieces like the "Shoe Hat” and “Lobster Dress”. We explore the history of vogue and how women were notable leaders of fashion back in the day. The Graveyard Zine concludes their first issue with a much-needed entertainment section that consists of movies, music, and book reviews. There's even a fun personality quiz to see which Hollywood actress you most closely resemble!

Apart from magazines, the graveyard team is still looking to expand their horizons. They plan to make a podcast, which will serve as an environment to discuss themes related to the zine issues. In addition, they have been organizing a Graveyard Gala, which is basically the MET gala’s better sibling. It is a 2-hour event for musicians, artists, actors, poets, storytellers and so on to showcase their work while fundraising for a local charity. There is a “Bloody Hollywood” theme for its attendees, and awards ready for most-liked pieces and best costume! As for any fees, donations are encouraged but certainly not required. It is a great event to expand your network with local artists! In a nutshell, The Graveyard Zine stands out because of its unique mission of honouring artists of the dead, while also providing an outlet for expression and creativity to those who are alive.
